The EUMaster4HPC Ceremony 2025 at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg

News from Monday 13 October 2025
Last Friday marked a special milestone for the EUMaster4HPC community as we gathered in the beautiful Wassersaal at the Orangerie Park in Erlangen to celebrate the EUMaster4HPC Ceremony — honouring the achievements of the second cohort of students, and the first to complete the full pan-European Master’s programme in High Performance Computing.

The ceremony opened with a warm welcome from Prof. Dr. Harald Köstler, followed by inspiring words from leading voices in the HPC community:

  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Hirsch, Vice President People at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg
  • Dr. Johnatan E. Pecero, University of Luxembourg, on behalf of Pascal Bouvry, coordinator of the project
  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietmar Fey, Chair of Computer Science 3 – Computer Architecture, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg
  • Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wellein, Head of the Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU)

Each speaker highlighted the value of collaboration, curiosity, and innovation — the very qualities that define the EUMaster4HPC programme and its students.

A Keynote to inspire the future

One of the highlight of the ceremony was the keynote lecture by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Ruede (Chair of Computer Science 10 – System Simulation, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg), titled “Fast Solvers – Natural Intelligence at the Exascale.” His talk captivated the audience, illustrating the cutting-edge research and forward-thinking spirit that define the HPC community.

Certificates, smiles, and shared pride

Following the keynote, Daniel Opalka, Head of Unit R&I at EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), shared thoughtful remarks on behalf of Anders Dam Jensen before joining Prof. Köstler on stage to present the certificates to the students. Their recognition marked the culmination of two years of hard work, collaboration, and discovery across Europe’s leading HPC institutions.

A moment to connect and celebrate

The evening concluded with a relaxed buffet reception, where students from all cohorts came together to celebrate, share experiences, and make new connections. It was a fitting end to a day filled with pride, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose — nurturing the next generation of HPC experts driving innovation across Europe.

Congratulations to All!

To all EUMaster4HPC students: your success is not just a personal milestone but a symbol of European collaboration and excellence in supercomputing. We can’t wait to see how you’ll continue shaping the future of HPC!
