Held from 18 to 24 August 2024, the EUMaster4HPC Summer School took place in Ostrava, Czech Republic. This event thoroughly immersed participants in High-Performance Computing and Data Science. Hosted by the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre at VSB - Technical University of Ostrava, it not only welcomed students from the second EUMaster4HPC cohort but also included selected external attendees.
Throughout the week, the EUMaster4HPC Summer School 2024 delivered an engaging programme filled with hands-on workshops, coding challenges, and expert-led sessions. As a result, these activities equipped participants with essential skills and practical insights into HPC technologies applied to data science.
Day one began with an exciting tour of the Karolina Supercomputer. Participants experienced the impressive capabilities of this advanced technology firsthand. Moreover, on the following day, students learned to log in and submit computational jobs. This provided them with practical experience in a cutting-edge HPC environment and consequently gave them a clearer understanding of its real-world applications.
During the event, speakers enthusiastically announced the results of the 2023-2024 Students Challenge, developed by Codasip. This challenge effectively showcased the remarkable work of the programme's first cohort teams. Furthermore, the celebration highlighted innovative approaches to the Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm. It underscored the technical skills and creativity of the second cohort's peers, ultimately reflecting the collaborative spirit that defines the EUMaster4HPC community.
Throughout the week, sessions comprehensively covered the fundamentals of Machine Learning and Deep Learning. In addition, practical applications in R and Python were explored. A focused MATLAB session also introduced students to key topics, including code optimisation, parallel processing, and GPU computing. Through hands-on projects, participants discovered additional MATLAB functionalities for large-scale HPC. They also explored deep learning, image processing, and signal analysis, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback on these immersive experiences.
Furthermore, social events created lasting bonds among attendees. Activities included a Welcome Party, a Planetarium tour, and an excursion to the picturesque Beskydy Mountains. Additionally, various team-building activities encouraged collaboration and networking, strengthening the ties between participants and the larger HPC and Data Science communities.
As the Summer School concluded, participants left feeling empowered and equipped with new skills. They gained valuable insights for tackling complex challenges in HPC and data science. This unique experience provided them with a solid foundation for future academic and industry endeavours.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre and VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. Special thanks also go to the Vienna Scientific Cluster, MathWorks, and all the expert lecturers. Their invaluable contributions made this event possible. Moreover, recognition goes to the organising team and dedicated participants, whose enthusiasm transformed this event into a truly remarkable experience.
Ultimately, the EUMaster4HPC Summer School not only equipped participants with cutting-edge knowledge but also inspired them. As a result, they are now better prepared to harness the potential of HPC and data science in their future endeavours.
