Workshop: “HPC in action: A full-day immersion into real-world practice”, CERFACS, Toulouse, Hybrid

News from Tuesday 16 December 2025
CERFACS, in partnership with Sorbonne Université is hosting “HPC in action: A full-day immersion into real-world practice”, a workshop introducing real-world HPC applications and career insights, on 16 January 2026 in Toulouse, France. Ce workshop will be held in an hybrid format.

We are pleased to announced that Cerfacs, in partneship with Sorbonne Université, is offering a workshop entitled HPC in action: A full-day immersion into real-world practice, on 16 January in Toulouse, France. This workshop will be held in hybrid format.

This one-day workshop offers a clear and accessible introduction to key HPC applications, technologies, and professional practices. Through presentations from Cerfacs, Sorbonne Université, CALMIP, and the Tempus project, participants will discover how HPC is used across research and industry. The programme also includes testimonials from EUMaster4HPC alumni, providing concrete insights into career opportunities in the HPC ecosystem. Designed for audiences familiar with HPC but not necessarily specialists, the workshop fosters exchanges, questions, and networking.

Agenda

8:45 - Welcome of participants

09:00 - Opening by Catherine LAMBERT – President of Cerfacs

09:20 - Omar DOUNIA (Cerfacs) – CFD Researcher

"The high-fidelity simulations of gas explosions: from small to large scales"

Cerfacs, which became an SAS in January 2021, is a center for research, development, transfer and training in simulation, modelling and high-performance computing, mainly for the benefit of its industrial and public sector partners: Airbus Group, Cnes, EDF, Météo France, Onera, Safran and TotalEnergies. It is also associated with partners like CNRS (Joint Research Unit), Inria (joint laboratory with Airbus), CEA and IMFT (cooperation agreements).

10:20 - Coffee-break

10:30 - Mathieu SALANNE (Sorbonne University) – Professor/Physical Chemistry Expert

"Development of a molecular dynamics HPC software: from theory to industrial applications"

Sorbonne Université is one of the eight awarding universities of the Pan-European High Performance Computing Pilot Master's programme, “EUMaster4HPC”. This programme brings together major players in HPC education in Europe and emphasizes collaboration across Europe with innovative teaching paradigms such as co-teaching and strong connections with the industry and the best specialists in HPC education to develop the most relevant and up-to-date teaching content.

11:30 - Žarko ASEN (Tempus) – Research consultant in DSP and machine learning

"A correction to support vector machine theory and kernel manifolds as implemented in the Temp software package"

Tempus is a project I’ve been working on for the past 10 years with the support of about 20 experts, professors and engineers from Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Israel, Northern Macedonia, Russia and Ukraine focused on time-series analysis in (near) real-time. It aims to produce the highest precision forecast of time-series data on the market.

12:30 - Standing lunch / buffet

13:30 - Joeffrey LEGAUX (Cerfacs) – Research Engineer in HPC

"Leveraging new hardware architectures for legacy HPC softwares: a retrospective and future trends"

Digital simulation using High-Performance Computing (HPC) is a major challenge for companies and research organizations. The European Center for Advanced Research and Training in Scientific Computing (Cerfacs) has had this in its DNA for over 35 years.

14:30 - Nicolas RENON (Calmip) – Technical Director  & Alejandro ESTANA (Calmip) – HPC and AI Research Engineer

“CALMIP Mesocentre: Kairos Supercomputer (#1 @ Green500) for HPC and AI”

CALMIP is the high-performance computing (HPC) mesocentre of the Occitanie region, structured as a Research Support Unit dedicated to serving the scientific community. It provides laboratories with a powerful HPC infrastructure, including the Olympe supercomputer, along with technical and scientific support. Computing resources are allocated through an annual call for proposals evaluated by a specialized committee. The mesocentre also offers training sessions and research data management services. Open to industry as well, CALMIP plays a key role in advancing HPC in the Occitanie region (France).

15:30 - Coffee break

15:40 - Emeric MARTIN, Gabriel STAFELLBACH and Christophe BOVET (ONERA) – Research scientists

"Powering Aerospace Innovation: High Performance Computing at ONERA"

ONERA, the French Aerospace Lab is France's national research center for aeronautics, space and defense. A multi-disciplinary organization, it bridges the gap between academic research and industrial applications. With a unique array of world-class experimental and numerical facilities (wind tunnels, HPC clusters, laser/optics platforms, simulation tools/libraries/frameworks, etc.), ONERA contributes directly to major civil and military programs, including the Airbus fleet, and Ariane launchers. The organization focuses on innovation, advancing technology in aerodynamics, propulsion, and materials to define the future of sustainable aviation and defense sovereignty.

16:40 - Alumni Testimonials from the EUMaster4HPC Programme

Two former students of the EUMaster4HPC Master's programme will share their experiences and discuss their career paths after completing the M2. They will present their new positions and highlight the skills acquired during the programme that supported their entry into the HPC job market. This session offers current students a valuable opportunity to engage with young professionals and gain practical insights for their own future careers.

17:10 - Closing
